FINISHING YOUR LENTICULAR:
1. Layout, Print, Mat Lenticular Image
A. Set up a Photoshop document that is 14 inches wide and 8.5 inches tall @ 150 dpi.
B. Place vertical guides at 1/2 inch intervals all across the document. Place horizontal guides at 1 inch and 7.5 inches.
C. Take your images and go to Layer > Flatten image. Then File > Save as, pick JPEG. Then place vertical guides at 1/2 inch intervals all across your images.
D. Use the guides to help you make clean selections of your images to splice together inside the 14 x 8.5 document. Make sure View > Snap To > Guides is checked. See http://photojojo.com/content/diy/how-to-make-lenticular-images/ for the splicing method.
E. Select all your layers by holding the SHIFT key as you click on them. Go to Layer > Align > Top Edges.
E. Save your Photoshop Document.
F. Flatten your Photoshop document. Save it as a Photoshop PDF.
G. Print and attend a matting demo.


2. Do Lenticular Image writing assignment:
Write a paragraph that answers the following questions:
A. How does your project CONCEPT represent the principle of CONTRAST?
B. Discuss how you used EMPHASIS and CONTRAST in your COMPOSITIONS.
C. Discuss your use of at least three of the Painting, Selection, Brush, Pattern, Color or Layer effect tools in Photoshop in your compositions.
(Refer to your Photoshop lecture documents for a list.)
D. What makes your design different from others?
E. What would you do differently next time?
F. Attach writing assignment to matted lenticulars and turn in.

VECTOR POSTER FINISHING

A. Write Up: Answer the following questions, in the format of a paragraph. Use the Spell and Grammar check functions. Print and turn in.


1. What is the subject matter of your poster? Why did you choose it?

2. You were required to use at least two different typefaces representing two different categories of type. What typefaces (fonts) did you use in your design? What categories (serif, sans serif, decorative, script) do they represent?

3. You were required to use at least two of the following type adjustments: Leading, Kerning, Tracking, Vertical Scale, Horizontal Scale. Name which type adjustments you made to your design and state where they can be seen.

4. You were required to use at least two of the following type tools/techniques: Area Type Tool / Type on a Path Tool / Vertical Type Tool / Adding Gradient to Text / Overlapping Objects / Creating a Drop Shadow via Copy & Paste in Back. 1. Select all type in your project. Go to Type > Create Outlines. This will ensure all type in your project displays and prints properly, and eliminate any error warnings that come up when you save.

2. Go to File > Save As. Lastname_IllustratorPoster should be your file naming convention. Choose ADOBE PDF from your file type options in the drop down menu.

3. Submit your file to Studrop > STEP > Art Technology > Art Tech 1 > T3 Illustrator Poster PDFs

ILLUSTRATOR FINAL ASSIGNMENT

POSTER PROJECT
Your task is to create a movie poster. The poster must be made in the style of a real movie theater poster. The movie represented in your poster must be of your own creation. Do not make a poster for an existing movie.

GENRE: COMEDY or ACTION

GOAL: To inform people about and convince them to see the movie.

AUDIENCE: PG-13 moviegoers.

EXISTING SAMPLES: http://www.movieposter.com/ and http://step-art-tech.tumblr.com/ and in the "MOVIE POSTER SAMPLES" folder in the Art Tech 1 folder on StuShare. Look at a bunch of movie posters. Try to identify the point of emphasis, and the secondary/tertiary accents in the VISUAL HIERARCHY of the design. Think about how you will achieve this in your design.

POSTER CRITERIA:
1. 6 inches x 9 inches @ 300 DPI

2. *Clear VISUAL HIERARCHY. (There should be a point of emphasis, and secondary/tertiary accents.
*Definitive sense of SYMMETRICAL, ASYMMETRICAL, or RADIAL BALANCE to design.
*Some type of CONTRAST from the list on page 44 of your Basics of Design textbook.


3. Your poster must incorporate a minimum of 6 separate images that have been worked into a cohesive image in Photoshop. You must include a movie title and other relevant movie text information.

4. Images must be public domain, creative commons licensed, or under your copyright, or copyright that someone has authorized for your use. Here are some good links for acceptable images. Also see our STOCK IMAGE RESOURCES blog entry:

Desaturate and Recolor Composition

1. Start a Photoshop document measuring 8.5 x 11 @ 150 dpi

2. Develop a composition of your choice, that features the following criteria:
• A minimum of 5 instances of de-saturation and re-coloring. Use both the color replacement tool and the full desaturate/recolor method. Also include instances of solid color, gradient, pattern and clipping mask.
• The composition must demonstrate symmetrical, asymmetrical or radial balance.
• Your de-saturation and re-coloring must follow one of these color schemes: monochromatic, complementary, analogous, split complement, triad, tetrad. Check out the color notes on our Tumblr page!

3. Print your composition when finished. Write down the following things:
A. What items were re-colored on the back of the page, and how you did it (color replacement tool or full desaturate & recolor).
B. What type of balance you applied to your composition
C. What type of color scheme you applied to your composition

Art Technology 1:
Agenda for 4/6:
1. Work on the brushes, pattern, effects and filters assignment. Make sure to write what tools were used and where they can be seen on the back of your printout before turning in. If you were absent 4/5, watch the tutorials in the ‘LayerBrushTools’ folder in the Lecture Videos folder on the Shared server. You will also want to look at the lecture files in the ‘brushes_color_pattern_effects’ folder on the Shared server.
2. Finish and turn in any missing work listed on your progress report.

Agenda for 4/7:
3. Read Chapters 3 and 4 in Basics of Design and do the worksheets for those chapters.
4. Do the Balance and Contrast Ad Analysis:
A. Find an ad that uses ASYMMETRICAL balance, or one that uses SYMMETRICAL balance.
B. Place the ad on a sheet of drawing paper.
C. Identify the GOAL of the ad. (What is the ad trying to do?)
D. Identify the AUDIENCE of the ad. (Who is the ad trying to reach? Describe the demographic as specifically as you can.)

H. Do you think the ad is effectively reaching the demographic they hope to target? Explain why or why not in 1-2 sentences.

Period 3 STEP Plus Arts:
1. Continue working on and finish your stop motion animation movies.
2. If your group finish your movie, bounce the file to .mov format and turn into the ‘Stop Motion .mov Files’ folder inside STEP Plus Arts on the Drop server.
3. Use remaining time to either create another stop motion film or make DVD packaging or a poster for your movie.


Period 4-5 Art Technology 2:
1. Work on the Independent Project you committed to. The sub will let me know if you do not look occupied Wednesday; you will have PLENTY to do that will be less fun if you don't follow through with what you committed to.
BRUSHES, PATTERN, EFFECTS AND FILTERS ASSIGNMENT
Create a Photoshop document that is 8.5 x 11 @ 150dpi. Experiment with the tools discussed in the Brushes, Color, Pattern and Effects Photoshop lecture.
Use at least one tool mentioned in each type layer of the document--At least one thing from each of the following topics:

SAMPLING TOOLS ASSIGNMENT

You have learned to sample pixels with a variety of tools in Photoshop.
Now it is time to start using your new skills.

1. Set up a Photoshop document measuring 8.5 x 11 @ 150 dpi.

2. Create a composition that is made out of samples from a variety of image sources. Images may come from the 'Sample Pix' in the 'Chapter 3 Lesson' folder on stepstushare, from the Internet, or from your own sources. You may also use the Photo Booth application to take a picture of yourself.

3. You must EACH of the following sample tools:
Healing Brush
Spot Healing Brush
Patch Tool
Clone Stamp
Content-Aware Fill

4. Print your design.

5. Write down where each type of sample can be seen the back of the printout and turn it in.

EMPHASIS AD ANALYSIS
1. Select a magazine advertisement, from the Internet or a magazine.
2. Place the ad on a large sheet of drawing paper.
3. Identify the GOAL of the ad. (What is the ad trying to do?)
4. Identify the AUDIENCE of the ad. (Who is the ad trying to reach? Describe the demographic as specifically as you can.)
5. Identify the point of EMPHASIS in the ad. Clearly mark it on your layout.
6. Also identify a SECONDARY ACCENT and TERTIARY ACCENT in the ad. Clearly mark them on your layout as well.
7. Name two techniques for effective emphasis listed on pages 27,28 and 29 of the Basics of Design text that are used in the ad. Clearly mark them on your layout.
8. Do you think the ad is effectively reaching the demographic they hope to target? Explain why or why not in 1-2 sentences.

Make sure your name is on the analysis, and turn in.
We will present them to the class later on.

SELECTION/MASKING TOOLS ASSIGNMENT
1. Set up a Photoshop document measuring 8.5 x 11 @ 150 dpi. You could also use the one we have been working in up until now, hiding the other layers.

2. Create a composition where you experiment with a variety of selection and masking tools. The images you use may come from the 'Sample Pix' in the 'Chapter 3 Lesson' folder on stepstushare, from the Internet (make sure the images are at least 1000 x 1000 pixels), or from your own sources. You may also use the Photo Booth application to take a picture of yourself.

3. You must use at least four of the following types of selections:
Rectangular or Elliptical Marquee
Regular, Magnetic or Polygonal Lasso
Magic Wand or Quick Selector
Select via Color Range
Altered Selection via adding to or subtracting from it
Feathered Selection
Crop tool

4. You must use at least two of the following masking tools:
Clipping Mask
Layer Mask
Quick Mask
Vignette Effect

5. Remember you have these tools to work with too:
Transformation tools (Edit>Transform--flip/rotate/shrink/distort the image, etc)

MUSIC/MEDIA & ART TECHNOLOGY CAREERS PROJECT
1. Go to http://www.mnvu.org/careers/viewCareers?id=03 to see a list of careers in the Arts, Audio/Visual Technology and Communications career cluster. Select a career within this cluster to research. Make sure to choose an occupation that you are interested in or would like to find out more about.

2. Go to the Minnesota Career Information System website. http://www.mncis.intocareers.org You will need to login to use the website. See your worksheet for login info.

• Click on “Occupations”
• Click on the letter that starts the career you choose (ex. C for camera operator)

3. Spend time exploring all the information provided about your occupation of choice. In particular, click on the “wages” tab. The table should at least inform you on the Minnesota and United States wages. Identify the median yearly wage for both Minnesota and the United States. Then click on the “Select Different States” button. Copy down the median yearly wage for 10 different states of your choosing along with the United States statistic. You should have 10 states (including MN) and the United States as your data set.

2. Store photos in the thawspace on multiple machines so more than one person can edit the movie.
3. Get tripods from Mr. Flavin if needed. Battery for Camera 2 is charging and can be found near where the supply cart was located. The sub can get other cameras out of my desk.


Art Technology:
Note: Make sure to shut down all machines and put up chairs at the end of the day.
1. Continue work on your vector illustration. Be ready to start working in Illustrator on Monday.
2. Turn in any missing work listed on the grade reports given to you yesterday.
3. If done, do an online Photoshop tutorial for extra credit. Google search ‘Photoshop Tutorials’ or look at sites like www.good-tutorials.com, www.photoshopcafe.com etc and find something you want to learn. Complete the tutorial, print a copy of it and turn it in.

Additionally, you must write a brief summary of:

APPLIED STATS:
Finish Production Plans and submit to sub. Any group that wants to begin filming must turn in both production plans in order to film. After turning in the Production Plans, you must fill out an Equipment Checkout Sheet in order film in locations other than Room 32.

Finish up Stop Motion Animations. Be sure to save your iMovie file and picture folder on a flash drive or other backup disk so you can continue editing as you do audio.

Desaturate and Recolor Sampler

1. Use the van pix on the Shared Art Tech folder. stepstushare > Art Technology > Art tech 1 > DESATURATE & RECOLOR.

2. Place the van in a new environment.

3. Use selection tools to isolate areas for re-coloring. Pick at least 5 things to be recolored in the picture--either the van or the background.

4. Save selections in the Paths panel, by clicking on the 'handlebar circle' at the bottom of the panel.

5. Desaturate and recolor the items. REALLY experiment with the opacity and blend mode of brushes and layers.

6. Include at least one pattern or gradient fill layer.

7. On the back of your paper, list which items were recolored, and which tools you used to achieve the effect.

Movie Poster Write-up
Answer the questions below. Use complete sentences in your responses.
1. How does your poster represent the genre you chose?
2. What does your poster tell the audience about the movie?
3. Describe the VISUAL HIERARCHY in your design. What is the point of emphasis? What are the secondary and tertiary accents? Refer to Chapter 2 in Basics of Design if needed.
4. What type of BALANCE is used in your poster? How can the viewer see that?
5. Name at least one CONTRAST technique you used. Refer to page 44 in Basics of Design for a list.
6. Describe how you used at least one tool from each category of tools on the back of your Movie Poster assignment sheet and where it can be seen.
7. Print a hard copy of your write up and turn in.
8. Save your bibliography as a separate word document. Submit electronically with your movie poster PDF.



To save your movie poster to PDF file:
1. Verify your layered Photoshop document is saved in its final state.
2. Go to Layer>Flatten Image.
4. Go to File>Save As
5. Name your file: lastname_movieposter
6. Select Photoshop PDF in the Format menu.
7. Hit Save.


To submit PDF file for printing:
1. Make a file folder with your name on it.
2. Place the PDF of your movie poster and your bibliography into the folder.
3. Access the StepStuDrop server through the shortcut in the dock. (If the shortcut is not in the dock, go to the Finder program. Select Go>Connect to server. Pick afp://stepstushare Login as yourself. Under the ‘select volumes to mount’ options, pick studrop.)
4. Open the STEP folder, then the Art Technology folder.
5. Drag your folder into the folder marked MOVIE POSTER PDFs and BIBLIOGRAPHIES.
6. I will print the files as they are submitted.

POSTER PROJECT
Your task is to create a movie poster. The poster must be made in the style of a real movie theater poster. The movie represented in your poster must be of your own creation. Do not make a poster for an existing movie.

GENRE: COMEDY or ACTION

GOAL: To inform people about and convince them to see the movie.

AUDIENCE: PG-13 moviegoers.

EXISTING SAMPLES: http://www.movieposter.com/ and http://step-art-tech.tumblr.com/ Look at a bunch of movie posters. Try to identify the point of emphasis, and the secondary/tertiary accents in the VISUAL HIERARCHY of the design. Think about how you will achieve this in your design.

POSTER CRITERIA:
1. 6 inches x 9 inches @ 300 DPI

2. *Clear VISUAL HIERARCHY. (There should be a point of emphasis, and secondary/tertiary accents.
*Definitive sense of SYMMETRICAL, ASYMMETRICAL, or RADIAL BALANCE to design.
*Some type of CONTRAST from the list on page 44 of your Basics of Design textbook.


3. Your poster must incorporate a minimum of 6 separate images that have been worked into a cohesive image in Photoshop. You must include a movie title and other relevant movie text information.

4. Images must be public domain, creative commons licensed, or under your copyright, or copyright that someone has authorized for your use. Here are some good links for acceptable images:

Work on the following assignments, in order:

1. Finish and print lenticular image. Make sure to change your printer settings to U.S. Legal sized paper, landscape orientation. You will also have to feed the paper into the top tray of the printer when you are ready. Though done in partners, each person should print their own image for assembling on Wednesday. See January 10 blog post for details.

2. Do the write up for the lenticular image. See January 10 blog post for details.

3. Store printed images and write-ups in mailboxes after completion.

4. Read chapter 4 in Basics of Design textbook and complete the accompanying worksheet.

5. Do the Balance and Contrast Ad Analysis posted below. Drawing paper, markers, etc can be found on the center cupboards in the classroom,

6. Turn in the chapter 4 worksheet and Balance/Contrast Ad Analysis when completed.
BALANCE AND CONTRAST AD ANALYSIS

1. Find a partner.
2. Work together to find two ads--one that uses ASYMMETRICAL balance, and one that uses SYMMETRICAL balance.
3. Place the ads on a sheet of drawing paper.
4. Identify the GOAL of the ad. (What is the ad trying to do?)
5. Identify the AUDIENCE of the ad. (Who is the ad trying to reach? Describe the demographic as specifically as you can.)
6. Identify the type of BALANCE in each ad. Clearly mark it on your layout.
7. List one way the use of BALANCE in the ad works to create EMPHASIS in each ad. Refer to the techniques for effective emphasis listed on pages 27,28 and 29 in Basics of Design if you need help.
8. List one type of CONTRAST used in each ad. Refer to the techniques listed on page 44 of Basics of Design if you need help.
9. Do you think the ad is effectively reaching the demographic they hope to target? Explain why or why not in 1-2 sentences.
FINISHING YOUR LENTICULAR:
1. Layout, Print, Mat Lenticular Image
A. Set up a Photoshop document that is 14 inches wide and 8.5 inches tall @ 150 dpi.
B. Place vertical guides at 1/2 inch intervals all across the document. Place horizontal guides at 1 inch and 7.5 inches.
C. Take your images and go to Layer > Flatten image. Then File > Save as, pick JPEG. Then place vertical guides at 1/2 inch intervals all across your images.
D. Use the guides to help you make clean selections of your images to splice together inside the 14 x 8.5 document. Make sure View > Snap To > Guides is checked. See http://photojojo.com/content/diy/how-to-make-lenticular-images/ for the splicing method.
E. Select all your layers by holding the SHIFT key as you click on them. Go to Layer > Align > Top Edges.
E. Save your Photoshop Document.
F. Flatten your Photoshop document. Save it as a Photoshop PDF.
G. Print and attend a matting demo.


2. Do Lenticular Image writing assignment:
Write a paragraph that answers the following questions:
A. How does your project CONCEPT represent the principle of CONTRAST?
B. Discuss how you used EMPHASIS and CONTRAST in your COMPOSITIONS.
C. Discuss your use of at least three of the Painting, Selection, Brush, Pattern, Color or Layer effect tools in Photoshop in your compositions.
(Refer to your Photoshop lecture documents for a list.)
D. What makes your design different from others?
E. What would you do differently next time?
F. Attach writing assignment to matted lenticulars and turn in.
APPLIED STATS: SONG ANALYSIS

1. Download SongAnalysis.docx from StuShare > Art Technology > Applied Stats
2. Use online resources like www.playlist.com to locate three songs for analysis.
3. List the link where the song can be found (copy and paste from your browser).
4. Identify as many instruments as you can in the track.
5. Describe the MELODY, HARMONY and RHYTHM components of the track.
6. Once you complete this form, save as LASTNAME_SongAnalysis.
7. Submit assignment to StuDrop > Art Technology > Applied Stats > Song Analysis

BRUSHES, COLOR, PATTERN, EFFECTS AND FILTERS ASSIGNMENT
Create a Photoshop document that is 8.5 x 11 @ 150dpi. Experiment with the tools discussed in the Brushes, Color, Pattern and Effects Photoshop lecture.
Use at least one tool mentioned in each type layer of the document--At least one thing from each of the following topics:
1. COLOR TOOLS
2. BRUSHES
3. PATTERNS
4. SPECIAL EFFECTS
5. FILTERS

Print your final sampler, then write down which tools you used and where they can be seen on the back. Make sure your name is on it!
