Type Nameplate File Prep and Print

To Prepare Your Files:
1. Make sure each of your letter panels is FLATTENED (Layer>Flatten Image) and saved as a JPEG or TIFF.
2. Create NEW Document: Width 11 inches, height 8.5 inches.
3. Set to 150dpi/CMYK Color
4. Place X Coordinate Guides at: 0.25, 5.25, 5.75 and 10.75 inches.
5. Place Y Coordinate Guides at: 1.75 and 6.75 inches
6. Insert two of your designs in the squares created by the guides. (File>Place>file.jpg)
7. Merge your placed designs into one layer.
8. Poke layer in eye and repeat steps 1-6 for remaining designs.

To Print Your Files:
1. When ready to print, turn on the layers one at a time. Change the following settings:
A. Activate the layer you wish to print. The layer you don't want to print gets poked in the eye.
B. File>Page Setup>Legal Size, Landscape Orientation.
C. When printing, make sure to put Legal size paper in the printer. Take it from the ream on the windowsill by the printer.

INDEPENDENT STUDY: Project Proposals
Your digital art projects will involve some collaboration with your colleagues.
Basically, your goal is to make something, and it must encompass some independent research and learning in order to be able to complete your project. If nothing else, the collaboration is in the research of techniques. You will eventually teach the class the techniques you research. Develop the following project proposal with your partners. Yes, the partnership is required.

1. What do you want to make?
2. What do you need to learn in order to do it?
3. How long do you think the learning will take?
4. How will you show the class what you learned?

5. What materials will you need?
6. How will you get the materials?

7. How long do you think the project will take?
8. Who will you be working with?
Type Designs: Nameplate

1. Create a design using the letters of your name
(first, last, nick, initials, family or friend)
2. At least three panels measuring 5x5 inches @ 150 dpi.
Each panel will be a different letter of your name.
3. Each panel should feature a pattern created by the combination of at least two categories of typefaces (Serif, Sans Serif, Decorative, Script) Use the letters to create different shapes that form positive and negative spaces.

4. Incorporate at least two of the following type adjustments into your design: Leading, Kerning, Tracking, Vertical Scale, Horizontal Scale.

5. Incorporate at least two Layer Styles into your final work.

INDEPENDENT STUDY: TUESDAY, 2/17

1. Work in groups on your radio and coffee projects.
2. Develop a set of comps--which must include at least 1 contribution from each group member--to present to your client.
3. Show comps to Mrs. Arnold if you finish. Print and mount, etc.
4. Learn something: www.good-tutorials.com
5. Everyone should be doing something; no one should be doing nothing.

ART TECHNOLOGY TUESDAY 2/17

1. Layout, Print, Mount Lenticular Image
A. Reduce your images to 6.5 X 6.5 inches.
B. Set up a Photoshop document that is 14 inches wide and 8.5 inches tall @ 150 dpi.
C. See http://photojojo.com/content/diy/how-to-make-lenticular-images/ for the splicing method.
D. Print the spliced document.
E. Fold and Mount!


2. Do Lenticular Image writing assignment:

Write a paragraph that answers the following questions:
A. How does your project represent the Life/Death concept?
B. Discuss how you used at least three of the Design Components listed below in your compositions. (Color, Contrast, Unity, Emphasis, Appropriation, Space, Time)
C. Discuss your use of at least three of the Painting and Selection tools in Photoshop in your compositions.

D. What makes your design different from others?
E. What would you do differently next time?


3. Do the Chapter 5 Photoshop vocabulary and lesson.
