Identity System: Business Card Comps

Business Card Comps:

Take the 16 documents that are your business card thumbnails.

Group the layers of each document into folders.

Drag the folders into a new document (3.5x2.0@150-250dpi)

Create at least 8 layer comps (window>layer comps) from your materials.

Should be able to see at least 4 color/texture changes and at least 3 font changes.

Identity System: Business Card Thumbnails

You recently began working on a VISUAL IDENTITY for yourself, consisting of the following:

  • Business Card
  • Envelope
  • Letterhead

The Business Card serves as the cornerstone for your project, because that is what is distributed most often in the professional world.

You should have 16 thumbnails for your Business Card that include this information:

  • First and Last Name
  • Professional Title (Design Student, Travel Agent, etc)
  • Phone # w/area code (Use STEP if you like: 763-433-4000)
  • Email Address (PROFESSIONAL! flowerheartpony89763@yahoo=not good! tina_jones@hotmail.com=what you want! Set one up if necessary.)
  • Graphic Symbol. (The mascot of your visual identity. Must relate to your Concept Board. Use autoshapes, scan your own drawings, collage images, etc. Must make it your own for it to count. Direct ripping of an image is not acceptable.
  • Mailing Address (Use STEP if you like)

To Do Today

  • Begin working on your 10 Roughs for the Animal Symbol assignment. Please refer to the green handout with directions. Follow the size template on the board. Drawing supplies and paper are on the table with the projectors on it.
  • If you were gone yesterday, you missed a major step for the project. Get the Client Meeting packet and work in pairs to complete the assignment. Get directions from your classmates. Refer to the PM clients list on the cabinet.
  • If you are not finished with your thumbnails, that is homework for the night. It is strongly suggested that you take the Roughs home tonight as well, especially if you are slow at drawing.

Animal Symbol Development Process

The Animal Symbol Project is our first in-class exercise in working to suit client desires.

After each key step in the process, we will simulate the client experience by altering our assignment around peer feedback. Here are the key steps:

  • 20 Thumbnails: Preliminary Composition Ideas. No serious development other than what is in the composition and what shape it is. Outlines!
  • 10 Roughs: After meeting w/your 'client', you will condense your 20 Thumbnails into 10 Roughs. The roughs are further refined, but not all the way. Presenting some "Rough Drafts", showing +/- space in your forms, line weight, etc, still using manual art materials.
  • 5 Comps: You will then turn your 10 Roughs into 5 Comps--These further refine your roughs into 5 solid, for real ideas, laid out in the computer. After presenting these to your client, you will tweak and adjust your comps into:
  • One Amazing, Glorious Final Design. Printed in Black/White and Color!
This is where deadlines kick on! If you are not ready for client meetings, be ready for point reductions.

Make sure you are on track to finish all Q1 assignments!

Arrange time to finish if you are not! STEP is open all day Friday. Take advantage!

If you are going to the volleyball game on Thursday, you must make up the final by 2:30 PM on Monday! This means you'll probably have to come in Friday!

Have a nice day.
